help please?!

Ok all you mothers of boys. How long do you leave them on the potty chair to get used to it? and is that the best way to do it? I know that I need to start soon. Any ideas will help thanks

From my experience boys often don't train well until 2 1/2 to 3. If they aren't interested I wouldn't push it. If they do show some interest put them on the potty a little to see if they will go and to get them used to it but sitting on it for a long time I don't think is a good idea. I however am NOT an expert potty trainer, that has been my most challanging part of mothering.

Judy says the same thing as Abbi. She's had 2 boys.

When Lars got so that he was willing to try to go in the toilet I took him in there about every 20 min.s and never left him to sit in there a long time. Everyone in the family got very excited for him every time he succeeded, never any negatives. I am almost sure the first 6 months of potty training is more training mom than the kid. :)

I think just taking them regularly and being happy about any progress is pretty much all there is to it and lots of patience:)Talking about it and letting him know that that is where you and Terry and anyone else goes. It really helps they are copying you, you know. We are a really open door family I think and that has helped the kids be comfortable with training. H was 22 mo, M was 17mo,B was 19mo and G was almost 3! THey are all different. Yours are too. Anna

If he is staying dry at night or for a couple hours at a time during the day, he may be ready. If not, I would wait until that happens.

Once he is ready get a timer and set it for every 30 minutes or so the first day. Take him in to try. Once you figure out how often he needs to go, you can change the timer to a longer period.

Get some Cheerios to toss in the bowl and have him aim :) Maybe buy some nice underwear to have handy for the days he can stay dry.

Hope it goes well for you.

Just even giving them a chance to "experience" the potty is good. And ditto to Abbi, don't push it. But if he is interested by all means give him the opportunity. They will do it when they are ready. that is my 2 cents. LOL
